KATHERINE TURKO HUSAK – 100 YEARS
July 2020
Katherine Turko Husak celebrated her 100th birthday at St. Nicholas Ukrainian Catholic Church in Wilmington, DE. The entire church met to wish her a Happy Birthday and presented her with flowers and cake with good wishes and singing of Mnohaya Lita.
Katherine was born on February 20, 1920 in Kniazhepil, Dobromyl region in Ukraine. She lived there with her family until she was taken to Germany in 1943 as a displaced person to work in a factory. There she met her husband Stanley and shortly they were married. They had no children. After World War II they immigrated to America in 1949 where they settled in Wilmington, DE.
By profession she was a hairdresser and later worked out of her home. She was a devout church goer and very active in church activities, choir and a member of Apostleship of Prayer. She sponsored full academic studies for Peter Novosedio, a seminarian in Brazil and later in 1962 traveled to Brazil for his consecration to the priesthood.
Sadly, her husband passed away in 2004.
After many visits to Ukraine she wanted to do something to help her hometown. The local church was in disrepair and she financed the building of a new church. In 2007 she traveled for the dedication of Assumption of the Mother of God Church and received a certificate of appreciation for her financial support. In addition, Katherine was a member and former president of Ukrainian National Women’s League of America, Branch 54 in Wilmington.
We wish her the best for her remaining years, Mnohaya Lita.
